But this week is probably one of the most rare eventful weeks I've had in awhile. No I didnt go to 7 parties in 7 days, no I didnt bang 7 men in 7 days (How I Met Your Mother reference!), but instead I got to see 2 gigs!! By international artists. :) Do you have any idea how rare that is? Especially for a Malaysian. Because like it or not, hardly any international artists come to Malaysia. Everyone always goes to Singapore, or Thailand, or Indonesia or the Phillippines, but not Malaysia no. If got also, THEY ALMOST ALWAYS NEVER COME BACK T__T
Most of you already know this, but a week ago I went to Singapore to watch Muse!! For the second time. It was also my first time in Singapore ehheh. But I'm only here to talk about the gig, not my Singapore trip. That will be saved for another post.
Victor and I went for the Muse gig. We bought our tickets, the cheapest tickets (stupid singapore and their high exchange rate!!) as it was the only one we could afford. Well, technically I could afford the most expensive one but then my bank account will be reduced to zero.. which is something I do not want to happen! So go away. Haha. Anyways! The gig was on a Wednesday night. It was part of Singapore's Big Night Out music festival, only its not really a festival if you only have one headliner now is it? Muse has 2 more supporting bands, ie Saosin and Rise Against. Both bands whom I am very unfamilliar with, but I remember someone telling me they are both rather... screamo, which is something I dont fancy! Not one bit.
Since our tickets were seated and numbered, we decided it was a bit pointless to line up for the show. So we explored around Singapore for a bit... went to Sentosa Island, sat on the luge three times, and went to Bugis Street before heading for the gig. Now here's the dilemma. If we took the MRT to the stadium, it would probably take us about 40 minutes to reach there because the line the stadium is on is parallel to the line nearest to our hostel, and the intersection between those two lines are like really far away from both the stadium and our hostel.
So instead we decided to take a cab instead, because the cab can just cut through the road perpendicular to both lines, aaand because its faster. I hope you get what I'm trying to say.
HOWEVER WE DID NOT SEE THIS COMING! It was rush hour. We left our hostel at 7pm-ish. The gig was supposed to start at 7pm, ie Saosin was scheduled to start playing at 7pm. And it was rush hour. So it was as jammed as f*ck and I was panicking like shit! Seriously. The worst thing you can do is be late for a gig. Not just any gig but a friggin Muse gig! Where you know its gonna be epic. So yeah, basically, I was so close to peeing in my pants because not only was i worried about being late, but while we were late the friggin taxi meter keeps going up and up and up and... oh god. I dont want to think about it. The total cost of that ride was so ridiculously expensive i.. sigh.
Anyway. We reached the stadium, eventually! We could hear Saosin playing from outside, and I was SOOOO RELIIIIEVED OMMGGGGG. We spotted the merchandise booth, and I was already planning to buy a lovely eco-friendly tote bag with the Muse Resistance picture on the front! So we lined up for the merchandise, and.... they sold out of the tote bags. ALL OF IT. I WAS SO HEARTBROKEN OMG SERIOUSLY. Its a girl thing la. You're so set out to buy something so pretty and handy and reasonably priced right, then suddenly BOOM(z) you find out that its SOLD OUT. ITS HEARTBREAKING. I tried all the other merchandise booths and they're ALL SOLD OUT. Seriously. Sniff. Pain. So I ended up buying a sweat band that until now I still havent worn yet. lol. Maybe I'll wear it to badminton tonight hmmm...
BUT ANYWAYS. So after that, we headed straight for our seats and watched Rise Against. By the time we reached the stadium Saosin was done with their set already. I know. wasted. sigh but nvm lah. I paid $91 for Muse anyway.
Once Rise Against was done, the backstage people took quite awhile to set up the stage for Muse, and soundcheck and everything. In that time span, I went to the toilet, lined up, did a number 1, and went back to my seat. My friend from the board found me and asked me if Victor and I would like to join her and a few others from the board. They were gonna stand at the balcony erm... balcony, throughout the muse gig instead of just sit like a bunch of old people. I decided to join them without hesitation! I was pissed at having to sit throughout the Jason Mraz gig last year, there's no way I'm gonna sit during a Muse gig. No way. Nuh uh.
So we joined the boarders. Stood in front of the stairs so that we wont block anyone's view. Once the lights were dimmed, we could see on the screens, the people walking up the stairs. Its the 'We Are The Universe' introduction!!! omg excites much? yes very. People started standing along the balcony with us, so i guess we werent the only ones who chose to stand.
Once the introduction was over, the stadium went completely dark, and I could vaguely see Matt, Dom and Chris walking on the stage... and I screamed like a little girl. The whole stadium screamed like little girls and boys. We were all very excited! Muse were FINALLY on!!! like friggin finally!
They belted out Uprising and the whole stadium jumped, sang along and raised their arms at appropriate times all together-gether. What an experience. Matt kept jumping up and down and across the stage throughout the entire gig, I lol-ed to myself a few times.
I expected Hysteria to be played after that, because thats how their setlist is normally like but instead they played SMBH, which is usually the third song.. I actually started to think they might not play Hysteria at all! Shame on me for doubting them.
After that, it was Map of the Problematique! A true blue muse fan's favourite song. I thought they might've dropped that off the setlist, so I was pretty darn happy to hear it live ^_^ I even took a video! A full video, ehheh.
After that it was Resistance. A looooovely sooonggggg. I took an incomplete video of it, because my camera ran out of memory halfway boooooohooooo.
After that, they were playing this riff... I was thinking.. gosh this sounds awfully familiar, until I realised it was interlude!!! ahahahaha. If you have the entire Absolution album you'd know what song it is. It is literally just an interlude, more like an introduction before Hysteria. Which is precisely how they played it. Without a pause, interlude ended and Hysteria began, which pretty much caused a havoc in the crowd la. Everyone was shouting and screaming woohoos and whatnots. I gave Lauranne a call because Hysteria is her all time favourite Muse song!
Anyway, here is the complete setlist. If I were to type out about each and every song they played, this post will never end!
We Are the Universe (intro music)
1. Uprising
2. Supermassive Black Hole
3. Map of the Problematique
4. Resistance
5. Interlude + Hysteria
6. Stockholm Syndrome
7. Nishe
8. United States of Eurasia
9. Sunburn
10. Helsinki Jam
11. Undisclosed Desires
12. MK ULTRA
13. Starlight
14. Time Is Running Out
15. Unnatural Selection
Encore
16. Exogenesis: Symphony Part I (Overture)
17. Plug In Baby
18. Man with a Harmonica intro + Knights of Cydonia
I headbanged like a mofo during Stockholm Syndrome, screamed like a little girl when Sunburn was being played because HELLO? RARE SONG MUCH?
Once we saw Matt wearing his keytar, we knew they were gonna play Undisclosed Desires. During that song, the people in charge of the lights belted out their lasers!!! It was gooorgeouuussss. Very suitable for a sexy song like that harhar.
After that, Matt changed back to using his guitar, tested it a bit and I kept thinking to myself... "is it mk ultra? omg dont jinx it debbie". I heard some boys shouting from below "NEW BOOOOOOOOOORN" so I just shouted for the heck of it "MK ULTRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" because its one of my favourite songs like ever.
Liz, my friend from the board who was standing next to me, said "dont, if they play it I think I will die" and I replied "i will... cry haha" (this was all caught on audio btw, thats why I remember this so clearly) and then before I know it, Matt plays the first 2 keys from the starting riff of MK Ultra. I SCREAMED and clapped uncontrollably LOL. and then he played like the first 4 keyes of the starting of MK Ultra, and I screamed summore and shouted "OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG" or something along those lines, and then Matt belts out the starting riff to MK Ultra with a killer stutter-intro and I was seriously. so close. to. tears. Seriously. When Muse didnt anounce any dates for Malaysia, I knew my chances of hearing this song live was close to non-existant. I wanted to hear this song live so badly because its just such an epic song. Definitely my favourite song off their latest album, and one of my favourite Muse songs of all time. I listened, jumped, headbanged, let loose, and just appreciated life at that moment. I was just so thankful hahaha. My life is fulfilled, until my next goal! :D
I did not record this video! I found it on youtube. Its a pretty good video ehheh.
The balloons came out during Plug In Baby. I forgot about the balloons once the gig started haha. I even forgot about Plug In Baby bwahaha. They extended the ending just so all the balloons can be popped, because the last time Muse came to Singapore back in 2007 at Fort Canning Park, the balloons werent popped in time so Dom said "we wont play the next song until all the balloons have been popped" and even did a cute little drumroll when the last balloon was popped. haha. Dom *heart*
Once all the balloons were popped, we all heard Chris's haunting tunes of Man with the Harmonica, we knew what was coming after that, and I felt so sad :( It was the last song :( :( I better enjoy it. And enjoy it I did. ^_^
Met up with the rest of the boarders at 7-11 after that. One of them was singaporean so he took us to a Singaporean-equivalent of malaysia's 'mamak', only its much more cleaner than our mamak haha. It was all the way at Bedok!
I ate Roti Pisang.. or as the singaporeans call it, Banana Prata! hahahaha! So western la. We stayed up and chatted until close to 3am before we headed back to our respective hostels. The singaporeans stayed and an hour later, went to the Muse after party (it was a huge risk because they werent sure if it was the right place) and met up with Dom, Tom and Morgan. I am 100000% jealoussssssssssssss. :( *sniff*
And thus is the end of my gig #1 of the week. I would blog about my gig #2 but I just realised that its 10.30pm and I have to head out in half an hour and I havent showered all day! eeyer.
So I'll blog about that another time. WHICH IS SOON BECAUSE I WANT TO BLOG ABOUT IT HAHA.
